The Secret In Their Eyes (El Secreto De Sus Ojos) is a lot of movie, done well. Hence, it won the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film as well as Spain’s equivalent of an Oscar, the Goya.

Set in Buenos Aires, this noir-ish film is told through a series of flashbacks, jumping from the main character’s present day to his eariler personal history, then forward to his more recent past. It is a suspenseful crime thriller that explores morality and justice. At the same time, it is a painfully, romantic cautionary tale about the consequences of denying your passion.

Famous Argentinean actor Ricardo Darín is magnificent as Benjamin Espósito, a deeply internal and lonely man, who has just retired from the state court as a criminal investigator. His character is haunted both by his memories of an unresolved brutal rape-murder case and his regret from not declaring his love to his soon-to-be married boss, Irene.
